Step 1: Collect the Materials You Will Need
The very first step to designing your iPhone 5 case is to collect the material you will need first. Although a lot of creativity goes into choosing the materials here, you might want to start with a clear iPhone 5 case made of plastic, rubber cement or any other clear-drying glue or adhesive, fabric swatches of a good size to cover the iPhone, markers, glitter pens, laser printer paper (preferably 25 pound), and any other materials you think might be unique for the process of designing a case that will look unique for you. Step 2: Create the Masterpiece of the Case
Here, you need to conceptualize the exact design you want. This includes colors, texture, feel, theme, and almost anything else you would like it to look like. Once you know how your design will look like, you will need a flat surface such as a table on which you will work. First, take the measurements of your iPhone 5. Do this by tracing it on a piece of paper or other material using a pencil or pen. Follow this by outlining the case of the phone onto any kind of material you would like, such as a piece of cloth.

Step 3: Cut and Insert the Material in the Case
Cut out the traced material of the iPhone 5 case and put it into the clear case you bought as shown in the image below.

You can choose to put the material inside or outside the case. When sticking the material outside the case, ensure that you use clear glue to stick it onto the iPhone case. In most cases, you will try to modify but end up reducing the room for the iPhone device itself.

If you want to make a certain pattern, you could trace it on the material you want and then cut the traces out as many as would suffice to decorate the whole cases. For instance, if you want to use colored dots or circles to decorate the case, you can cut them out carefully using a an art knife or scissors, and then glue them to the case bare as it is, or stick them to a piece of paper that you will use for the inside of the case

Step 4: Glue the Design to the Clear Case
In order to glue the material or decorations you have on the iPhone case, you will use rubber cement or spray adhesive to lightly and evenly coat the front side of the pattern. The front side is the one you have designed or added the pattern to. Ensure you are in a ventilated room when coating with spray adhesive to allow even drying of the glue. These adhesives can also be very toxic, so take this as a precaution. Press the design firmly but carefully onto the back end of the clear case you bought while ensuring that you smooth it evenly from the center outward.

Step 5: Dry and Affix the Case
Allow your case to dry. This might take even up to 24 hours depending on the type of glue or adhesive you used. The case should sit for all those hours for you to be sure that it is dry before you affix it onto the iPhone. Affix to the iPhone 5 once you are sure it is dry and you are ready to go. It is however important to be careful when designing the case especially if you are using cloth material. Using thick fabric can reduce the room for the iPhone and make the case to strain or not to snap close.

The procedures and illustrations above are good when you want to design a custom iPhone 5 case for purposes of uniqueness and aesthetics. However, when you want to give the device the ultimate protection then opt for rugged designed cases such as those sold in various outlets of iPhone cases such as Greatshield and among many others. Depending on the kind of utility you want to put the case to, you will definitely choose appropriately.
